Not Kayaking Moore Lake
I intended on kayaking around Moore Lake (and Sping Lake, in Spring Lake Park) this afternoon but was pevented.
For a long, long time I've wanted to put a little boat into Moore Lake and explore the little island to the west of the highway that bifurcates it. It's not a big lake, just a tad over 20 acres, so it wouldn't take long to circumnavigate it, either. But this was apparently not to be.
I drove to the park on the east side, unloaded my gear and was about to get into the water when the kid staffing the office came up and said, "I don't think you can do that here." He showed big a binder of City of Fridley ordinances which seemed to indicate, rather unclearly, that personal watercraft were not allowed in any city lake. I even had him call his superior (who didn't know, either).
In the end I decided to abandon the attempt and load the boat back onto my Jeep. I'll going to get in contact with someone in Fridley's parks department to see if I can get an official ruling on this. Personally, I would find it absurd that canoes/kayaks would be prohibited from public lakes (especially ones that provide swimming beaches and fishing piers). And it probably is.
